What's up?

You might be wondering what's happening in these days of silence. Well a few things have been building up behind the scenes. The printed version of Nuclear Abominations isn't up yet, but that's because I am still doing some interviews and am finishing a few detailed retrospective articles on Carcass and Beherit (with plenty of photos and infos). The tentative date of December wasn't too optimistic however, because I trust it won't take much more time. I am also lagging with reviews and have at least 50 new ones to do to catch up with promo material. I will post 2-3 reviews a day for the next few days to get to the present day, with the month of December excluded as originally planned.
As for the releases, two works are under construction right now: the Nuclear Death demo collection is way close to completion, I just need the artwork and layout finished hopefully by end January/February, I can assure you I am in control of the situation. The idea of a limited double Lp version is also vivid and much probable, but let's not overtalk now as I usually do. I am also following a split release between Anatomia from Japan and Bowel Fetus from Australia, both total Autopsy worshippers as yours truly. We're still discussing about the layout and much of the recording has yet to be done but see, if the Nuclear Death thing is going to take too long, that's the next thing you'll see from the label. You can check more details on the Nuclear Death release on the Official band website I registered last month (www.nuclear-death.com)
Nuclear Abominations isn't only about goregrind, but goregrind surely has some underground fascination on me, that's why I also put up a forum/wiki website www.goregrind.com/wiki where you can find information about anything you need on this genre. If you play or know informations that are not listed there, please make your contribution, it's easy and free.
I also took some pictures at the Just Killers No Fillers show in Germany last month, which I plan to post on this website soon. I have also read a few good books on webdesign techniques and finally got a digital camera, both things which should improve the website aesthetics.
A big hello to everybody who has kept in touch all these weeks of silence and don't lose your faith, more reviews are to come SOON!

DEMONICAL (Swe): "Bloodspell Divine" Cd 2007 Dreamtide
Vote: 8.80

Click for complete, printer friendly review I admit that war is not my favorite theme in terms of aesthetics and lyrics in Death Metal, but when things are done properly, it works indeed. It's a bit weird becouse there is no real common theme judging by the song titles, and since there is no lyricsheet here either, I cannot tell if the next release will follow this concept. I got this promo of Dreamtide Music records directly from Martin/Centinex a few weeks ago and I have listened to it quite often since, it's killer Death Fucking Metal with a LOT of energy and the right sound and real no weak riffs. It is not striclty Swedish Death as in Left Hand Path if you know what I mean, but it succeeeds in sounding advanced without being polished. The distortion is low and powerful with lots of fast and chuggish riffs, choruses and trademark Swedish vocals that sound deep but also distinct. Compared to latest Centinex here we have some way heavier, more coherent and compact Swedish Death. No real weak spots here to exploit, they sound a bit like latest Dismember without the boring melodies, with an added war metal touch a la Exmortem. A full length like this will be very impressive. Dreamtide music website does not seem to exist but it may just be down at the moment. More of this, please.

INTESTINAL DISGORGE (USA-Tx): "A Clockwork Whore Binge" Cd 2005 Sonic Death
Vote: 6.00

Click for complete, printer friendly review I am telling this very sincerely: I remembered Intestinal Disgorge to be way heavier than this. When I was about to put this album in the player I was expecting hugely sick sewage scatological goregrind shit noise, but sincerely this stuff didn't turn out to be as heavy as I hoped. The sound is quite clear all the time and the guitar distortion would fit better a modern Death Metal band. Lots of riffs are balanced between crusty modern grindcore a la Bolesno Grinje and some power chords a la Internal Bleeding and harmonics and stuff of clear Brutal Death origin, but I just don't dig this mickey mouse vocals that seem like a timid attempt at playing the grindcore noise game. Even if sometimes some sick twisted savagery emerges, Japanese are able to condense all this and more in one quarter the songs contained in this "Clockwork Whore Binge". There are also no lyrics inside, just a short story of a guy killing girls and masturbating on the strangled cadavers. And the cover is a very cheap piece of computer graphics, which to me suit a goregrind/noise release as well as a photo of a field of red flowers. No really, there is some deviation in here but it seriously need an extra dose of filth, if it was on vinyl, i would rub it on a dirty floor to add some craclking and dirt to this sound. Go back to the Rectal Sludge era, it was much better. Do not misunderstand me, this is not wimpy stuff, but it's just they turned all the attention to noisy side leaks instead of making the whole songs a work of noise.

LAMENT CONFIGURATION (USA-Ga): "Demonic Incantations" Cd-r 2005 Vile Art
Vote: 3.00

Click for complete, printer friendly review Reviewing a band after seeing Grotesque in concert is something quite painful to stand, especially when a band is so full to the brim of clichès and devoid of personality as this one. This is the kind of sad ballad Black Metal a la Burzum out of ideas. Musically this is nothing but of shit. One million kilos of reverb, which might as well hide Dream Theater beneath this veil of filth. Nothing wrong with it, so far so good if they leave the moaning continuously vibrating all the time. What kills everything here is that couple of happy, sing along rock and roll riffs which just fit the distant vocals like a dick in the pea soup. There is little to pity in this shit. If Black Metal is surely more about misanthropy and atmospheres, this fails tragically. There is a thin veil between dismal simplicity and being incompetent. This shit band stands right in the second field. The cover is standard greyscale with gothic fonts and stuff but well, this might as well be the case with this genre.

TEARDOWN (Fin): "Cold Rooms" Cd-r 2006 s/p [demo]
Vote: 4.00

Click for complete, printer friendly review Well first of all I wonder how the fuck this thing got among my promo heaps. This kind of emo-goth shit is so mellow I wonder if I could stand it as a whole. Seeing this was a Finnish band I was pretty sure the singer was at least a hotbody of the turbo-pussy brand, so I started looking frantically for band pics on the Internet but I am afraid this chick came up even being not that hot as I hoped. Seriously speaking I hate this shit music and this is just a matter of integrity to cut this thing short. The production is fine but this kind of Lacuna Coil/69 Eyes etc sad and melodic (not to mention pretentuous) movement has really come to saturation years ago. The production is fine, and the structures are simple but they work. Hell, how can you do wrong whan you have 2 riffs per songs and they're also copied them from another million bands before, just watch MTV for 2 or 3 hours and make a patchwork. This is a genre that's going nowhere really, but I am afraid I am going to listen to this band someday in a metal pub... Decent packaging of the post-McKean era, with Photoshop gringe duotones and guys desperating. At least we don't have an angel on the cover this time.

Vote: 8.00

Click for complete, printer friendly review Tumour are here again with a couple of new short killer tracks of their characteristically hyper-heavy, distorted one man goregrind. The vocals are still similar to the sound of water drained down a sinkhole, with a sound so heavily distorted it creaks and strains the recording equipment to red herring levels. A couple of short studio tracks bring us to an insane live Beligian show. I was listening to these tracks with professional headphones and I must say besides the strong chattering in the background everything sounds amazingly clear. You won't believe me but I was able to recognize a few songs from the other Tumour Cds I already reviewed: this shit is mesmerizing sick and darn lovely. I find the label "pornogore" a bit narrow for Tumour, but they surely fit this split nonetheless. In the end the Cd also looks quite good, with a folding poster with Pierre from Braindead's classic, blood soaked, stylish artwork holding the four covers together.

Click for complete, printer friendly review Third in the list we got Fuck Saw, a fresh vomit bucket of apocalyptic/techno goregrind which has all the elements rightfully arranged for a lustful feast of porn galore. The vocals here are a single note frog croak, which is fine, but sounds a bit less incisive than Psychosadistic Haterapist, where they're way noisier and heavier (hey those songs in this split are real killers). What however relevantly beats the shit out of the other bands here, is the sheer speed these songs can attain at times. The drum machine programming doesn't convince me 100%, it just doesn't sound just like a rave-party hammer like in SMES or Libido Airbag; it's mechanical in a little bit less catchier way. But the songs can be fast, and the arrangements are flawless. There are some hints at gabber/speedcore sonorities as well, and some decently done, but the overall works seems a bit undecided. I am not saying Fuck Saw is not good, this stuff is excellent indeed, but let's say it has a bit less personality than Tumour or Psychosadistic Haterapist and just get a bit overshadowed here.

Click for complete, printer friendly review Psychosadistic Haterapist, is a bit noisier and a bit more serious than the previous Bloody Diarrhoea. They still use mechanical drums and froglike harmonizer effects, but the sound here is much more claustrophobic and darker. In some parts they even remind me a bit of Catasexual Urge Motivation, even though the overall work is less refined. I like the use of eerie samples in the background, and the Goreopsy-like echo the vocals have, in this grey, fuzzy soundscape. The structure of these song are closer to ambient than happy goregrind, and even the sporadic chugs are not just slam dancing hits. I like the insane, serious approach of this band, and the song titles seem do deal with serial killers and sadistic rapes, not just comic play on words. If there is some band which seem to be able to brandish the Vampiric Motive axe, this seems to be the case.

Click for complete, printer friendly review Bloody Diarrohea plays light hearted, crunchy groove-goregrind a bit in the vein of Jig Ai, Cock & Ball Torture, Cumgun etc. dressed with samplings from relatively mainsream works like Sin City and the Happy Tree Family. Riminiscences of Gut and the German sludge gore are strong, and surely the sound evolves around the heavy power chords and downtuned guitar shovelwrk. The songs are fresh and hold for the whole running time, but sometimes the over the top humour becomes a bit boring. Some good shit might come from here, however.

S.M.E.S. (hol): "Gory Gory Halleluja" Cd 2006 Bizarre Leprous
Vote: 8.00

Click for complete, printer friendly review Erwin continues his incursion in the realm of bizarre rave music splattering tons of inhuman gabber/techno sonorities with characteristically bull frog vocals in this brilliant new Cd. The Schijten Met Een Stijve project has been active for some time now, with a load of releases that include a rather strong partnership with Topon Das of Fuck The Facts. I admit my favorite Schijten Met Een Stijve stuff is still probably the split they did with Lymphatic Phlegm, maybe a bit more contaminated by silly computer game effects than this Gory Gory thing, but this shit is still excellent (and has plenty of ignorant samples as well). You can really tell when one can handle the mixer pads and sound editing programs, this shit has a sick touch which is absent in many other bedroom projects I have heard recently. The sound is in overall quite dense, with a kind of machinery-like chain factory sound going in the background. The beats are pure acid nightmares, the kind that must be quite fun to hear at a party with lots of stroboscopic lights and amphetamines gnawing the back of the brain. The fun element in the project is still showing through the song titles, although I doubt there is any kind of relationship between these names and the concept between each song. It might be my impression only but the second half of the album slowly tends to sound a bit more relaxed with jungle-like sonorities. The layout is minimalistic and sadly mediocre in the usual Bizarre Leprous vein, Roman should really consider investing a bit more in the packaging of the albums instead of releasing dozens of half improvised covers, while his releases are usually super, the layout always looks to me cheap and hurried. Actually Schijten Met Een Stijve is one of the bands which can possibly live without any layout at all maybe, but the realm of psychedelic in which this band lives is also ripe with so many cool ideas (using glow effects and transparency are two cool examples) for the packaging any good artist could go on experimenting for days. As usual, you have to take this music with a pinch of salt, it s obvious you can t compare S.M.E.S. with Last Days of Humanity, as they re totally different concepts. My take is that this stuff rules at the right time of the day. But this is exactly the kind of shit you either love or hate. If one has to make some cleansing, S.M.E.S. are sure to stay in my playlist.

BUKKAKE VIOLENCE KOMMANDO (Ita): "The Women are All Whores also You Will Be Punished" split Cd-r with MENSTRUAL DRUNKERS (Ita) 2006 Grind Block
Vote: 7.90

Click for complete, printer friendly review I enjoyed Bukkake Violence Kommando even more than Menstrual Drunkers, for their reharsal noisy, sewage sound. They play something closer to Gut in lyrics and spirit, but the music itself is definitely more into very very early Meat Shits, with added mid tempos. The sound is a boiling stew of noise and super harmonized vocals with an added edge of live sound, resulting in a drum which is hardly perceptible, and guitars that are little more than grating sound. This is the kind of garage noise which brings me back to my first days into noisecore, and still today I admit I find this shit to be much more sincere and personally appealing than bedroom projects where 3/4th of the band elements is called Cubase and Fruity Loops. When you cross untalented noise, a love for the gross and extreme and totally shit recording, the result is a mass of pure instinctive energy. For some reason, it still has a magneting feel.

MENSTRUAL DRUNKERS (Ita): "Infected Fragments of Menstrual Sangria" split Cd-r with BUKKAKE VIOLENCE KOMMANDO (Ita) 2006 Grind Block
Vote: 7.20

Click for complete, printer friendly review The town of Bologna is finally stirring from its long period of torpor which lasted forever, always one or two steps behind the rest of Italy regarding extreme Metal/Core scenes (not to mention an horizontal ignorance in terms of scene events which has always been appalling). Grind Block is a label from that city which is being very prolific in releasing a shitload of noise/gore/grind projects on semi-professional Cd-rs, a bit in the vein of Fecal Matter Discorporated from US. Despite the home printed covers, this shit looks great. Menstrual Drunkers (which probably means "drunkards" in Italo-English) is a cybergrinding terror one man band not too dissimilar to Anal Penetration in style, with ultra fast drum machine programming and a guttural layer of harmonzied vocals. The recording is probably 100% digital so the sound comes out almost perfect, despite the distortion is quite heavy. While porn lyrics are all fine for me, I definitely prefer the sicker titles to the the humorous ones. Goregrind needs some seriousness too, it's become a bit too infalted with smiling teenagers and stupid band pics in pink skirts. More in detail, almost all songs deal with tampons and menstrual blood in one way or another, which is, well, just another way of specializing in one field I guess, as Creamface did with facial cumshots and bukkakes. There is really not much I could criticize here, the music genre itself has a quite rigid set of rules and we don't stray too much from the classic (but all the more enjoyable) flow of goregrinding vocals and machine gun drum. Some samples of tampon ads are added in the mix, in French, Italian and English, just to spice up things. Nice product anyway, support the band!

IMPURITY (USA-Fl): "Unearthly Affinity" MCd 2006 Nuclear Winter
Vote: 8.00

Click for complete, printer friendly review Impurity plays fantasic, powerful Death Metal the American way, but the American way of the early '90s. There is brilliancy in this music and it could hardly be otherwise since the owner of Nuclear Winter records knows his stuff for sure. Main compraisons could be made to Incantation without the doomy parts, or Immolation without the obsessive demoniac riff hammering. The vocals are deep and growling, and the riffs morbidly dark, just the way Death metal is meant to be. Not only the cover art is a splendid example of torture, but the lyrics too are interersting stories about Indian Mythology (well not that original nowadays maybe). It is great to hear not all the Florida scene has moved to hypertechnical blasting. The bad aspect in this release is the running time, just below the quarter of an hour, but it has to be bought at all costs, this is cool shit.

CRUCIFIST (USA-Ny): "demo 2005" Cd-r [demo]
Vote: 6.20

Click for complete, printer friendly review For which unfathomable reason this band is catalogued as Black Metal is still a misery to me. Have we come to a point where the lyrics have nothing more to do with Black Metal? Becouse the distortion here sounds absolutely in the vein of Autopsy "Metal Funeral" or maybe a bit rawer, less technical, the Abscess - way. In any case this stuff is pretty decent, for being a project of Orodruin mit Danny Lilker on bass. The riffs are very loose and elementary and have a deep taste of punk slugginess and the recording is certainly demo-level but accurate, if a bit lacking of profundity. Crucifist is basically an old-school Death Metal band and the doomy element covers a good 50% of these tracks but I found contaminations of Stoner and neo-Black Metal as well on the third track in particular. In the end, when you have a band like The Ravenous and Hemlock in your roster, I wonder how much need there was of a project like this, becouse there is really nothing of added value here. The vocals are the weak spot here, raucous and a bit too flat for my tastes, but there is a good share of excellent riffs thrown in this hedgepodge of styles that comprise Autopsy, Melvins, Kyuss and whatever you can name.

NEMESIS AETERNA (Spa): "Mind Disorder" Cd 2006 s/p
Vote: 5.90

Click for complete, printer friendly review This is the kind of Death Metal which just does not create much enthusiasm in me. The vocals are deep and the songs all right, but it just misses "it", there is just no great feeling here. The chemistry is near-perfect, the songs have lots of structure and the songwriting is solid, with added skill and clean recording, yet this is the kind of albums that just pass through my player as I write the review and then no more. There are some delicate signs of dissonance and even melodic chord vibrations, but in the whole, I cannot find a single hook on which to hang my attention. In a way this is the same problem I got with Oath to Vanquish. With so many fantastic bands out there, it is high improbable I could spend my money on a Cd like this, independently how chiseled it is. Click for complete, printer friendly review Shit, this is even worse than Lugubre (but not as bad as The Syre probably)! Noisy (but not incomprehesible) Black Metal of the cold, misogynist, sadistic kind, the production is desperate, in a way that all sound sound just muffled but they're quite distict at the same time, as if filtered through bad earphones. The riffs are the cheapest, a mix of high school rock and some inspiration from the realm of dismal Black Metal. The vocals are those of Marge Simpson, but sometimes they recover a bit for just a few seconds in the realm of manliness. I doubt I would suggest this stuff to anybody, this is maybe not as completely disastrous as Cradle of Filth et similia, but we're well below the average here.

Vote: 4.50

Click for complete, printer friendly review Lugubre are a completely forgettable black metal band from Holland, with a magnificent logo disgraced by cheap bevel effects applied all over on cover. It fits them quite well, as they're a mockery of themselves. Re-heated Black Metal of the cheapest kind, with bad but not raw sound, Simpson like vocals, pegleg drumming, and worse of all terribly banal riffs. This is the kind of "Black Metal" which could make me fall asleep on the highway. The drums are inadequate to say the least, but what kills is the complete eveness of the songs, this is stuff that can make even an Insidious Decrepancy album sound exhuberant (and that should say it all). It's a shame how these bands sometimes pretend to tag Brutal Death Metal as boring. There is aguy with a Tsjuder shirt in the pics, and I think I remember they to sound a bit similar to this. PRIMAL DAWN (Irl): "Zealot" MCd 2006 [demo]

Click for complete, printer friendly review The recording here is excellent to me, raw but clear, the drums being noisy but at the same time powerful in their empty-barrel sound. The definition Death/Black/Thrash fits a bit awkwardly here, as honestly I find this band to be purely Death Metal, one has to explain me why one has to call in Thrash Metal anytime there is some complex structure in a riff. The chords remind me a little bit of Watain (and henceforth, Dissection - ah ah) but the vocals are generally speaking a bit deeper and it's the hammering drum blast beneath which keeps the songs to another level. Taken in its whole, this is a good 15 minute demo, and a quarter of an hour is the perfect length, becouse I don't think I would gladly listen to 45 full minutes of Primal Dawn. Not that they're bad, mind ye you dwarfs, but they just say it all in 15 minutes, period I's not criticism. The songs are so intense, so varied they seem to last way longer than they actually do. At 3-4 minutes each it's refreshing to hear a band being able to handle instruments and play so tight.

Tracklist: 1 - Wrath Of The Righteous 2 - Reap The Chosen 3 - Worlds Within Worlds 4 - Silently By The Sword
